A group of students from Tagore International School, participating in the Breaking Barriers outreach program, visited the Naz Foundation. This interaction aimed to foster understanding and support for the queer community. The students engaged with Mr. Sahil and several other members of the community, gaining valuable insights into the challenges faced by individuals within this group.
During the discussion, it became clear that many people in the queer community experience significant stigma, which often hampers their ability to express their true selves. This societal pressure can lead to feelings of loneliness and fear, underscoring the importance of fostering an inclusive environment.
The Naz Foundation team emphasized several key strategies for supporting individuals in the queer community. They highlighted the necessity of creating safe spaces, particularly in educational settings, where all individuals feel secure in sharing their experiences. Additionally, the importance of active listening was discussed, with a focus on validating friends’ experiences without judgment.
The visit also included a ”superpositivity exchange,” which featured seven questions designed to promote open dialogue and understanding. These questions were introduced by Mr. Vickrant Mahajan during a seminar held at our school, further enhancing the interactive nature of the session.
In conclusion, this visit proved to be a profoundly enriching experience for all participants. Moving forward, the students plan to organize workshops on LGBTQ+ topics and collaborate with the Naz Foundation to deepen their understanding and support for peers. This initiative aims to dismantle barriers and foster a more accepting environment within our school, which takes pride in its commitment to inclusivity.
